Treatment by a Consultant
Surgeon:
Once a mole has been identified as being at risk of
changing into, or actually being, a malignant melanoma, it needs to be removed
completely and sent for laboratory tests.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not the size of
the malignant melanoma that is important - but its depth.
The
deeper the malignant melanoma has grown, the higher the risk that it will
spread.
Therefore, however little or big the mole is on the
surface, it is essential that if it appears to be at risk of becoming or being a
malignant melanoma, it is completely excised including any deeper extension.
This means taking the whole thickness of the skin and some of the underlying fat
as well.
Our consultant surgeon, Mr Mark Whiteley MS
FRCS(Gen), is very experienced at removing these problem moles and can do so at
our fully equipped local anaesthetic operating theatre.
By performing the excisions under a local
anaesthetic, you will be able to go home straight afterwards.
Stitches can either be removed by us, or if more
convenient, we will give you a communication letter for your local surgery to
remove them at the correct time.
Mr Mark Whiteley is a member of the BACD (British
Association of Cosmetic Doctors) and so will completely excise the mole but will
make sure the scar is as cosmetically good as possible.
